PANTANAL BIRDING TOUR
The Pantanal lies in the western part of central Brazil and encompasses about 140´000 square kilometers of savannas, forests, rivers and lagoons. It is considered the largest freshwater wetland in the world. During the rainy season from October through March this area floods and plant life explodes. Then in April as the waters recede, the birds return in vast numbers and variety. Due to the wide open areas between patches of forest, birds are easily seen. It is estimated that during the year over 600 species of birds call the Pantanal home! And on some places you might see 400 or more species ... The Pantanal is one of the most important breeding grounds for herons, storks, ibis and Roseate Spoonbills all of which can be observed frequently and in great numbers. The magnificent Jabirus (Tuiuiu) , with its distinctive black head and red neck pouch, is the largest stork in the world and the symbol of the Pantanal. There are 26 species of parrots, including the endemic Nanday or Black-hooded Parakeet. Interesting bird species are Undulated Tinamou, Anhinga, Capped Heron, Jabiru, Buff-necked Ibis, Roseate Spoonbills, Southern Screamer, Snail Kite, Hyacinthine macaw, Turquoise-fronted Parrot, Toco Toucan, Silver-beaked Tanager and Ferruginous Pygmy Owl. Macaws abound within this area. This is one of the last places where the largest hook bill, the endangered Hyacinth Macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus) can be seen daily. This tour starts in Cuiaba, the capital of Mato Grosso.

CHAPADA DOS GUIMARAES
In the transition between the Cerrado and the Amazon rainforest, the Guimaraes plateau acts as the dividing line between the Paraguay and Amazon River basins. RIO NEGRO PARADISE: MANAUS & THE AMAZON
The Rio Negro is the crown jewel of Amazonia. Born in the ancient sands of the Guianan Shield, her dark waters course over foaming rapids and through vast island archipelagos to meet the Amazon at Manaus. Second only to the Amazon in volume of water, the Negro drains a huge portion of the northern Amazon Basin. Manaus is a good base for Amazonian birding because of the accessibility from it. The city is a large port at the confluence of the Rio Negro and the Amazon, over a thousand miles from the Atlantic.
First we will take a boat-trip to the south side of the Amazon. We'll visit some islands with specialties of Amazonian islands, including furnarids, antbirds, and parrots most readily found there. And there would, of course, be other birds too, such as the Pearly-breasted Conebill and the Red-winged Wood-Rail. We pass through the "meeting of the waters" in the wide river where the brown water of the Amazon and the black water of Rio Negro merge. Then we'll venture north and west toward Novo Airao, which will be our base for another boat-trip into the Anavilhanas archipelago, a series of islands in the Rio Negro. Of interest will be places of permanently flooded forest (or "igapo") and seasonally flooded forest ("varzea") with birds indigenous to those places. Among them, antbirds are notable, such as the Leaden and Klage's Antwrens. Other birds that occur include the Zigzag Heron and Amazonian Umbrellabird. Also occurring in this area would be the Gray Dolphins, and Pink Dolphins, they can be easy to see. Our boat is comfortable, featuring air-conditioned cabins , shared bathrooms and great meals. Finally we'll spend a couple of days in the area of the town of Presidente Figueiredo. We'll go to the area of the Caverna Refugio de Mongoara, where the bright-orange Guianan Cock-of-the Rock occurs.

PANTANAL BIRD WATCHING TOUR - JUNE 2010
“As avid, amateur birders and naturalists, we had seven days with Fernando Evangelista in the Pantanal that surpassed all of our expectations. Fernando was the perfect guide; everything about him connected with us: 1) his deep love of nature--its variety, its beauty, and its spirit; 2) his excellent knowledge of regional birds and wildlife; 3) his special expertise in finding less easily observed birds and animals; 4) his sensitivity and respect for the knowledge and skills of local guides and ranch workers; 5) his keen attentiveness to us and our desire to learn as much as possible; 6) his instinctive teaching talent in helping us to see and discover for ourselves; and 7) his appealing personality, warm friendship, constant enthusiasm, good command of English, and natural sense of humor (in his second language, no less). On a scale of 1 to 5, we rate him a 6!”

PANTANAL BIRDING & NATURE TOUR - November 2009
Brad and Noma Macurda from Texas contacted Carlos Grandez regarding a birding trip to the Pantanal during the dates of the 19th of November through the 23rd of November. Carlos arranged for Ricardo Casarin to be our birding guide. We were absolutely delighted with the services we received during our trip. The choices of Pouso Alegre, a large rustic farmland filled with a variety of habitats, and Rio Claro lodges, a resort with some forest lands and the Rio Claro River, as the primary birding sites were excellent. This provided a good variety of habitats for observation. Ricardo is very keen at finding birds in the densest cover, both visually and by sound. He was able to identify the birds by sight and sound. He was very helpful in calling the birds obscured by their color or vegetation. He is very patient and strived to make sure each of us saw the bird we were observing. He knows the common and Latin names for all the birds. His English is very clear and his explantions are easy to follow. He took care of daily logistics of rooms and meals very well, and followed a schedule discussed for our morning and afternoon walks and excursions. He is a careful and good driver, observing posted signs and showing good prudence in passing other vehicles. He is one of the best birding guides we have had in our many birding trips, and we look forward to returning to Brazil for further birding adventures with him.

PANTANAL BIRD & WILDLIFE TOUR - October 2009
We have just returned from an unforgettable fortnight wildlife tour of the Pantanal. Our trip was organised by Pantanal Eco Expeditions and was very much an intensive birding and wildlife expedition. The first 4 days took us Southwest from Cuiaba to the Bolivian border. Here our accommodation was Spartan. We stayed at isolated Brazilian farms but the birding was good and we saw many wintering North American waders such as Wilson’s Phalarope and Upland sandpipers as well as very high counts of Pantanal specialities such as Hyacinth Macaw in the 100’s. Toco Toucan by the dozen and good numbers of Black Skimmers. We returned east to Caceres and a trip on the Paraguay River adding many bird species and having excellent views of feeding Giant River Otters. We continued onto the more tradition rout with 7 nights at various lodges on the transpantanaleria and two full days on the Cuiaba River. In all we saw 164 species of bird, 15 species of mammal and 6 reptiles including two up-close and personal encounters with Anaconda.
Our Guide for most of the tour was Carlos, He has excellent vision and his concentration never lapsed. Despite 14 hour days in the sun. He is a fluent English speaker and has a great sense of humour. One area of weakness was his lack of bird song knowledge, but he has promised to improve this for next year.
For our final 3 days Helder Freitas was our guide and he is a birder, adding substantially to our tally with his knowledge of bird song and lamping for nightjar and night mammals.
